Driving Tips > The 60-Second Driver
Defensive Driving
Defensive driving is something we should all practice whenever we are behind the wheel. Adopt these habits to make your driving more defensive and safer.
Keep a safety zone around your vehicle at all times. We recommend checking the mirrors often to see, not only what's behind you, but in the next lane as well.
You almost want to drive with a 'worst case scenario attitude'. Preparing for the unexpected can help you avoid a collision down the road. For instance, when approaching an intersection--if you haven't visually confirmed that the intersection is clear--then slow right down until you can see that it's safe to proceed.
It's a good idea to cover the brake when travelling through an intersection where some uncertainty exists. It cuts down on reaction time if you have to stop in a hurry.
And focus further down the road--a distance of 12 seconds in the city, 20 seconds on the highway--it gives you more time to react to surprises.
