Air Bags

Air bags can protect you from serious injury in collisions. While air bags are very safe, to prevent it from hurting you when it deploys you must do these two things:

  1. Sit at least 25 cm away from the air bag
  2. Wear your seatbelt

You must wear your seatbelt because it’s your main restraint in a crash. The air bag is added protection, but on its own, it may not be enough. In a collision, your seatbelt will tighten to hold you in place and ensure that the air bag can cushion you the way it was designed to.

If you’re unbelted, a crash can launch you forward with such force that the air bag alone won’t stop you from striking the windshield or being thrown from the vehicle. As well, not all vehicles have side air bags, which means if you’re hit from the side or from behind, your front air bag won’t protect you.

That’s why it’s always important to buckle up every time you get behind the wheel.
