Accident Procedures

If you have a minor accident with another vehicle there are things you can do to prevent the situation from getting worse.

First, turn on the hazard lights to warn traffic behind you. Then, before exchanging information, pull off to the side of the road as much as possible.

Your registration card has all of the information you need--the make, model and licence plate number of your car, the registration and insurance policy number and the serial number. Get the same information for the other vehicle, as well as the other person's driver’s licence number. Exchange this information even if there's no visible sign of damage.

If you're first on the scene of a serious accident, arrange for police and ambulance to be notified right away, and turn off the ignitions of the vehicles to help prevent a fire. Use your hazard lights to warn other traffic, and direct traffic until police arrive.

If you hit an unattended vehicle, leave a note with the appropriate information. The penalties are severe for leaving the scene of even a minor accident.
