Safety Services Manitoba
Through education, training and the distribution of safety information, Safety Services Manitoba fosters the public’s dedication to safety.
We provide this non-profit organization with an annual grant to deliver driver improvement courses and training for motorcycle, snowmobile and all-terrain vehicle drivers.
Safety Services Manitoba also teaches the 55 Alive/Mature Driving program, a comprehensive nation-wide course that Manitoba Public Insurance has sponsored since 1998. The course helps participants update their knowledge of driving rules and regulations, and teaches them how to compensate for age-related changes that affect driving proficiency.
For more information on the programs, call 949-1085 or visit the Safety Services Manitoba website.
Citizens on Patrols Program (COPP)
The COPP program is a crime prevention initiative involving more than 1,600 volunteers in more than 60 Manitoba chapters. COPP volunteers support local law enforcement by promoting deterrence, prevention, education and awareness. In a typical year, they contribute more than 30,000 volunteer hours to help keep their communities safe.
Manitoba Public Insurance provides funding and co-ordination of the program in co-operation with the Winnipeg Police Service, the RCMP and other municipal police services. To become involved, call 985-8849, toll-free 1-866-326-7792, or visit www.citizensonpatrol.mb.ca.
School Patrols
Manitoba Public Insurance is proud to be a major sponsor of the School Patrols safety program, which for 70 years has been protecting young children as they walk to and from their elementary schools.
The corporation and CAA Manitoba, working with the Manitoba Association of School Trustees, annually provide funding for training, safety vests and flags for more than 9,000 young road safety ambassadors.
We also publish the annual School Patrol Safety Handbook, which is used by police and patrols as a training and resource guide. The training is carried out by the City of Winnipeg Police Service, the Brandon Police Service and the RCMP.
Each year the corporation supports the City Wide School Patrol Awards. We recognize the top school patrol captain in Winnipeg, and sponsor school trophies for the third place patrol teams in Winnipeg. Manitoba Public Insurance also sponsors professional development training of school patrol supervisors and hosts school patrol game nights with the Goldeyes and the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Child car seat checks
By some estimates, more than 60 per cent of child car seats are installed incorrectly. We’re working with firefighters, health professionals, daycare providers and police to turn that situation around.
Free car seat clinics are available from firefighters and ambulance attendants in Winnipeg, Brandon and Portage la Prairie at selected drop-in times, and we are expanding the program into other communities throughout the province.
In Winnipeg, drop in at any fire station from Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
For more information call 985-1619, or toll free 1-888-767-7640.
Community events and demonstrations
We take our road safety message out to the community as a sponsor of annual events that are aligned with our priorities. For example, we sponsor the Teddy Bears' Picnic in support of the Children's Hospital, which provides the vital care needed by children injured in motor vehicle crashes. Our participation is an opportunity to teach all ages about dangers on the road.
