Vulnerable Road Users > Older Drivers
Studies
have shown that by 2041, the number of elderly people between 60 and 79 in
Canada will increase by 125% and those 80 years and older will increase by
279%.
In 1994, over 80,000 Manitobans aged 65 years and over had a valid drivers’ license. This is expected to increase to 115,000 by 2021.
Currently, we have in place the Older and Wiser Driver initiative. The central element in that initiative is the Older and Wiser Driver booklet. The material provides a confidential self-rating form for mature drivers, driving tips for city driving, highway driving, parking lots, night driving, getting additional help, transportation options etc.
In addition to delivering presentations on Aging and Driving and the Effects of Medication on the Older Driver, Manitoba Public Insurance sponsors the Mature Driver Workshop organized by Safety Services Manitoba. This program provides a refresher for older drivers. The workshop updates older drivers on traffic laws, signs, signals markings and provides practical advice on safer driving.
Research has shown that the skills needed for safe driving – vision, reflexes, flexibility, hearing – begin to deteriorate around age 55 with an even greater loss after 75. Aging drivers can adjust their driving habits to cope with this decline. In order for our senior citizens to remain safe on the roads, we encourage them to observe the following safety tips:
