Vulnerable Road Users > Watch for school children
Drivers
need to use caution
Children are returning to school now, so you need to drive cautiously in and near school zones. Be watchful and prepared to stop suddenly. It is illegal to pass another moving vehicle in a school area within 15 minutes of either the opening or closing of classes or any time when children are on the school grounds or near the road.
Remember, you must stop and yield the right-of-way to all pedestrians about to cross at marked and unmarked crosswalks. It is illegal to pass traffic ahead of you that is slowing down or stopped for pedestrians using crosswalks. And don’t park or stop within three meters of a crosswalk.
Students should obey traffic rules
Before and after school and at lunch time, you might notice the bright orange safety vests worn by school safety patrol members. These students are trained to help other students safely cross streets, so please obey their directions.
There are special rules to follow around school buses. Watch for flashing red or yellow lights on buses and know how to react safely.
Parents can teach road safety
If you are a parent, now is the time to review important safety rules with your children whether they are walking, cycling or rollerblading to and from school. See our Help Keep Children Safe in School Zones brochure.
Manitoba Public Insurance works with daycare providers, schools and teachers to provide road safety programs tailored to the needs and abilities of children.
