- Manitoba Public Insurance surveys indicate that on average six out of ten (58%) drivers report having driven while drowsy on the job, and also while commuting to and from work.
- Over one-half (55%) of Manitoba drivers’ report that they had driven drowsy in the last year on a long trip, at night, and during the day.
- Among respondents, the 18-24 year age group reports the highest incidence of driving drowsy (86%) when compared to other age groups, 25-39 (62%), 40-64 (59%) and greater than 65 years (35%) respectively
- From 1997 to 2001, on average 125 drivers are involved in fatigue-related crashes every year.
- Although fatigue-related collisions only account for 6.48% of at-fault collisions, most road safety experts conclude that these crashes tend to be under-reported.
- The most dangerous hours in which sleep-related collisions occur are between midnight and 7:00 am, and 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm.
- According to the National Sleep Foundation, fatigue related collisions represent 100,000 police-reported highway crashes, causing 71,000 injures and 1,500 fatalities in the US each year.
