Buyer beware – flood-damaged vehicles
Used vehicle buyers need to be aware that flood-damaged vehicles from the United States Gulf Coast could find their way into the Manitoba market.
While Manitoba Public Insurance is not aware of any of these vehicles having entered the province, consumers should learn how to detect them.
Prospective purchasers can check the history of a vehicle from the U.S. through three websites: www.nicb.com, www.carfax.com or www.autocheck.com.
One of the most effective ways to research a vehicle is to request a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) search from Manitoba Public Insurance by calling 985-1999, or toll free 1-866-489-5749. Please note that these searches only cover Canadian jurisdictions and there is a $10 fee.
It’s estimated that more than 700,000 vehicles from the Gulf Coast were flood damaged due to Hurricane Katrina. These vehicles have a greater risk of premature failure of the structure, mechanical components, engine and transmission and electronic systems of the vehicle, including occupant protection systems, such as airbag components. There may also be health concerns because of mould.
A VIN search is only one of the steps a person should take before purchasing a used vehicle. Here are a few more:
- Have the vehicle inspected by a trusted and certified automotive technician before purchase.
- Check for damp or musty odours.
- Check for any signs of rust or mud in the trunk, glove box and beneath the seats.
- Check under the hood and look for a water line marked by mud or silt.
