Province’s Enhanced Identification Card popular with southern Manitobans
The majority of Manitobans applying for the Enhanced Identification Card reside in the southern regions of the province, according to data collected by Manitoba Public Insurance.
Of the nearly 7,000 Manitobans who have applied for the EIC, more than 60 per cent reside in Winnipeg or communities south of the provincial capital. Residents within the Brandon area account for another 20 per cent of applicants.
“Residents in the Winkler, Steinbach and Morden areas have decided that the EIC, which is an approved document, meets their travel needs,” said Marilyn McLaren, CEO and President of Manitoba Public Insurance.
“Close proximity to the American border is certainly a contributing factor in their response,” said McLaren. “But we still have applicants from as far north as Thompson, The Pas and south to the Parkland region.”
Manitobans are encouraged to educate themselves about the new travel rules before travelling to the United States. As of June 1, 2009 all Canadian citizens 16 and over must present a passport or approved alternative when entering the U.S. by land or water.
Recently, Manitoba Public Insurance reported that 95 per cent of respondents described the EIC application process as “positive”, while 70 per cent described their experience as “very positive”. Results were generated from nearly 1,000 EIC applicants who completed a questionnaire during their visit to an EIC centre.
“The survey told us that Manitobans find the interview process is friendly and accommodating,” said McLaren. “The Corporation conducts these customer surveys on a regular basis. The survey is very specific and designed to assist us in improving customer service as it relates to the EIC application process.
“The EIC is a voluntary, approved alternative to the passport and continues to be requested by Manitobans.”
Survey questions were wide ranging, from how the customer was greeted upon arrival, appointment waiting periods and service provided by the EIC interviewer. Customers were also asked to suggest improvements to the EIC services. Comments ranged from better signage; no waiting for appointments; free beverages and less documentation.
Those wanting more information about the EIC can visit any Autopac agent, who can provide the EIC Applicants’ Guide, or by going to www.mpi.mb.ca. Cost of the EIC is $30 for holders of a driver's licence and $50 for all others.
