Manitoba Public Insurance suing auto thief

A Selkirk woman is being sued for nearly $43,000 by Manitoba Public Insurance for her role in a two-vehicle crash that injured several innocent people.

Naomi Lauren Severight, 21, admitted to being the driver of a stolen vehicle that crashed last year into a family on their way to a farmers’ market in Portage la Prairie.

The public auto insurer is seeking damages for the two vehicles involved. Earlier this year in provincial court, Severight was sentenced to nine months in jail after pleading guilty to possession of a stolen vehicle, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, assaulting a peace officer and two counts of uttering threats.

“On behalf of our rate payers, Manitoba Public Insurance will attempt to recover damages against auto thieves,” said Keith Addison, Manager of Special Accounts and Subrogation, Manitoba Public Insurance.

Severight, who was 20 at the time of the crash, had stolen a pick-up truck in Winnipeg and subsequently led police on a high-speed chase west down the Trans-Canada highway. Due to high speeds and public safety, RCMP was forced to abort the chase.
