Today Manitoba Public Insurance mailed out 550,000 rebate cheques totalling $60 million to everyone who had basic Autopac policies for the 2005/06 insurance year.
As directed by the Public Utilities Board (PUB), individual customers will receive a refund equalling 10 per cent of the basic Autopac premium they paid for their 2005/06 insurance year, net of any additional fees or discounts. For the average customer, the refund will be about $110.
It will be the third time in the past six years that Manitobans have received rebates, totalling $200 million. Each time, the PUB has directed the way the rebate is returned.
The cheques have been mailed to the last address on record for each customer. If a customer has moved without notifying the corporation or leaving a forwarding address, the returned cheque will be kept by the corporation until the customer claims it.
“Last year nearly 15,000 cheques were returned, and we’re still keeping those cheques in a safe place, waiting for their owners to contact us,” said John Douglas, Vice President of Corporate Public Affairs.
The cheques should begin arriving in customers’ mailboxes this week, but some may take a little longer to deliver. Manitoba Public Insurance is advising customers to wait three weeks before contacting the corporation to track down any wayward cheques.
