Manitoba Public Insurance contest challenges youths
to use their creative skills to help prevent auto theft

The Multi-Media Challenge is again inviting Winnipeg students in Grades 7 and 8 to channel their creative energies into sending strong messages to their peers about the dangers and consequences of auto theft.

The initiative, now in its second year, is a joint venture between Manitoba Public Insurance, Manitoba Justice, Winnipeg Police Service and Winnipeg schools.

In Manitoba, the average car thief is between 12 and 17 years old. The majority of thefts were associated with joy riding, and auto theft ultimately cost Manitoba Public Insurance ratepayers about $28 million last year. The human toll was equally disturbing -- last year four people were killed and dozens injured as the direct result of auto theft.

“Education and public awareness are two keys to reducing auto theft within the young age groups,” said Marci Riel, Auto Theft Issue Specialist with Manitoba Public Insurance. “Participating in the contest gets students engaged in a dialogue about the issues around auto theft and possible solutions to the problem.

“It encourages them to apply peer pressure in a positive sense,” said Riel.

Students can enter in five categories: song, video/radio commercial, poster/banner, comic strip or short story. Winners will receive a $500 prize at an awards ceremony in June.

Interested students can obtain more information from guidance counselors at participating schools, or online at www.mpi.mb.ca. The competition deadline is April 30. Winning entries will be displayed at participating schools, public awareness events and could be used by the supporting partners in future auto theft awareness campaigns.
