Hail damage? MPI reminds motorists to report a claim

Vehicle owners who sustained damage to their vehicle during the August 21 hailstorm that hit parts of Winnipeg and Southern Manitoba are encouraged to report their claims soon with Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI).

In response to the 9,000 and growing number of hail claims filed after the storm, MPI opened a hail-only claims centre at 1981 Plessis Rd. With the majority of those claims now having been processed, MPI's hail claims centre will be ceasing operations as of October 13.

To report claims, Winnipeg area customers can call the Autopac line at 985-7000. The line is open Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In rural areas, customers can call their nearest claim centre or office in the MPI policy guide, "Your Guide to Autopac" or at www.mpi.mb.ca.

"The August hailstorm was extraordinary in nature, which required extraordinary customer service," said MPI President Jack Zacharias. "The opening of the hail-only claims centre required MPI to re-locate staff from other facilities.

"With the majority of hail claims having been processed, these staff members will soon be returning to their regular duties. If someone hasn't yet filed a hail claim we recommend that they do so soon."

While motorists have up to two years to report vehicle damage, MPI encourages people with hail damage to book their appointment prior to the closure of the hail claims centre. After October 13 motorists with hail claims will have to take their vehicle to one of the five Winnipeg claims centres.
