The Manitoba Driver, from Manitoba Public Insurance About 220 words More than 1,100 safety patrollers from Winnipeg schools were saluted at a Winnipeg Goldeyes Game on June 17. Manitoba Public Insurance hosted the celebration, which featured an on-field procession, hundreds of thundersticks and a pre-game presentation and ceremonial first pitch. There are roughly 9,000 young people in Manitoba who daily help make their schools safer places: 8,000 in Winnipeg, 500 in Brandon and another 500 from communities around the province. Laura Turner, a Grade 6 student from Winnipeg’s Sargent Park School, was honoured for winning the Louise Staples Trophy as the top safety patroller in Winnipeg. She also got to throw out the first pitch of the game. Manitoba Public Insurance makes a key contribution to the Safety Patrol program by helping purchase high-visibility safety vests and crossing flags for the youngsters, and by producing the School Safety Patrol Handbook. The Manitoba chapter of the Canadian Automobile Association and the Manitoba Association of School Trustees (MAST) also help organize the program. In Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Police Services School Resource Unit trains each school's patrol supervisors (usually teachers), patrol captains and patrollers. Outside of Winnipeg, schools or law enforcement agencies provide the training. If there isn't a school safety patrol program at your local school, give CAA Manitoba’s School Patrol co-ordinator a call at 262-6037. --30-- © 2008 Manitoba Public Insurance |
