Motorcycle safety tips
What you need to know for a safe summer ride

Spring is now upon us and that means we’ll start seeing motorcycles come out of winter hibernation and return to the roadways.

All motorists are encouraged to share the road. Drivers of passenger vehicle are reminded that motorcycles are entitled to be on the roadways. Driver courtesy can go a long way to prevent collisions.

Motorcycles are a fun, efficient mode of transportation, but they simply don’t have a ton of steel around them to protect the rider. Motorcycle riders are encouraged to take a few precautions prior to every ride.

Before you start out, take a few minutes to do a pre-ride safety check, including an inspection of your tires and brakes. And make sure your headlight, mirrors, windshield and visor are clean.

Drive responsibly and stick to the speed limit. Motorcycles can accelerate quickly and reach speeds far in excess of speed limits.  Leave plenty of space between you and other vehicles, so you have enough time to react if something unexpected happens, and vice versa. Always ride with your headlight on, and be aware of other driver’s blind spots.

Wear appropriate protective gear – it can protect you from severe injury. Start with an approved motorcycle helmet and visor. Leather clothing and gloves are recommended, along with boots that cover the ankle. T-shirts and cutoffs are not advised.

Consider taking a motorcycle riding and safety course to practice and expand your driving skills and learn how to anticipate dangerous scenarios. Safety Services Manitoba offers several courses, including a 21 hour course featuring practical and classroom training, and an 8 hour course focused on practical training. Both courses include motorcycle dynamics, including balance, control and steering, defensive driving skills, braking techniques and proper riding attire.
