Insurance Fraud > Suspicious Losses

There are losses that, by their very nature, give rise to suspicion. The most common areas involving fraudulent claims are large fire claims, total thefts and, to a lesser degree, vandalism, partial theft, and hit and run losses.

Because of the high incidence of potential problems in this area, it is imperative to provide more investigation of these claims than normal. Our Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is required to investigate all referred claims where the Corporation is exposed to financial risk due to criminal and/or fraudulent activity.

Our SIU Department no longer requires information referrals on claims involving motor vehicle theft or total loss by fire. However, all theft claims involving snow machines or ATVs--even those sent for further investigation--are reported to SIU, along with all unrecovered stolen vehicles and vehicle fires involving manufacturing or repair defects.
