Residential Streets with Parked Cars

Here's a driving situation that can get tricky...approaching oncoming traffic on a residential street with parked cars.

If you're on the side with parked cars, are you "required" to pull in behind those cars and wait for traffic to pass?

Actually, no. The vehicles travelling in opposite directions should share the remaining lane... if there's room. The proper procedure is to slow down and signal that you're going to pull out and that the oncoming driver may have to move over and make room for you to pass.

So, it's really a judgment call. If you think there's enough room, communicate to the other driver by signalling, and away you go.

There may be times when there isn't room for both cars to squeeze by each other in that single lane. That's when it's time to pull over and wait behind the parked vehicles.
