Yielding

Yield signs are usually located where a lane or road merges with another road.

At a yield, you must slow down and be prepared to stop for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles. You must give them the right of way.

Any time you enter on to a major thoroughfare, whether turning right, left or merging into traffic at a yield sign, you should enter into the lane closest to you.

But many drivers wait until all lanes are clear before proceeding into the second or third lane. This ties up traffic and aggrevates the drivers behind.

If you need to be in the far lane, the correct procedure is to enter into the closest lane, then signal and change lanes once you have merged into the flow of traffic.

Be very careful when checking for on-coming traffic. The vehicle ahead of you may stop suddenly while you are looking to the side.

Make your shoulder check quick, and use the side mirrors to your advantage.
