Seatbelts by the numbers

Car accidents are the leading cause of death for people under 40, and your risk rises dramatically if you don’t wear a seatbelt.

The numbers tell the story:

Prevent the interior collision

It’s simple physics. A moving object will keep moving unless it’s held back. So if your vehicle is stopped suddenly in a collision, your body will crash into the steering wheel, dashboard or windshield. Then your organs will collide with the insides of your body. It’s actually three collisions in one. That's why wearing a seatbelt is essential.

Airbags don’t replace seatbelts

Airbags in modern vehicles can be a lifesaver, but they’re designed for use with a seatbelt. Without your seatbelt on, the airbag can actually harm you. The force can break bones or jostle you out of position – even out a side window – if you’re unbelted.

Incorrect and correct use of a seatbeltWear it well

Twisted seatbelts are less effective and can even cause injury. Make sure the belt is flat and snug against your body. And don’t disconnect the shoulder harness or put it under your arm – it needs to run across your chest to protect you.

Don’t put your life – and pocketbook – at risk

The fine for not wearing a seatbelt in Manitoba is $278 for drivers and passengers. Unbelted drivers receive two demerits.
