Keeping pedestrians safe is a two-way street
When you're driving you have a responsibility to watch for pedestrians. When you're walking you need to stay alert and avoid unnecessary risks.
Safety tips for drivers
- Yield to pedestrians at all crosswalks by coming to a complete stop.
- If traffic beside you stops for any reason, make sure you stop too. It's illegal to pass a vehicle that has stopped for a pedestrian.
- Wait for pedestrians to finish crossing the street before driving ahead.
- Use extra care when driving through school zones. It's illegal to pass a moving vehicle within 15 minutes of classes starting or ending.
- At an intersection when the light is red, stop your vehicle at the indicated stop line. If none is marked, stop before reaching the crosswalk or sidewalk.
Safety tips for pedestrians:
- Cross only at crosswalks or intersections controlled by traffic lights with a pedestrian walk signal.
- Before stepping into the street, make sure all vehicles are stopped and make eye contact with the drivers.
- Before crossing, look left, right and left again.
- Watch for vehicles turning right.
- Hold small children by the hand when crossing.
