Autumn driving holds extra danger for motorcyclists
If you’re riding a motorcycle or scooter this autumn, be aware of the extra hazards that come with driving during this season.
Cool weather reduces traction
Cooler weather makes tire rubber harder. This change reduces traction, affecting your cornering and braking ability. Since a motorcycle has less rubber on the road than a car, decreased traction can be dangerous.
Be careful on frosty roads
On cool, clear mornings, frost may linger on roads in shaded areas or on bridges. Be aware that your tires’ grip on the road can change suddenly in these conditions.
Fallen leaves can be hazardous
Autumn leaves look pretty on trees, but can be a hazard when lying on the road. Riding over a bunch of wet or frost-covered leaves can cause you to lose control of your motorcycle.
Drive defensively
Motorcycles and scooters can be lost in vehicle drivers’ blind spots in the best driving conditions. But when vehicle windows are fogged or frosted, drivers are even more likely to miss seeing you on your motorcycle or scooter. You need to stay alert and drive defensively in the autumn.
Vehicle drivers should ensure that their windows are clear and be aware of all traffic
around them.
Dress warmly
When riding in cooler weather, make sure to dress for the temperature. If you’re cold when riding, your response time may be slower. Numb fingers and toes mean you have less control of your machine.
