Driving Tips > The 60-Second Driver
Snowbanks
Every winter, snow piles up at the side of the road. And sometimes it piles up so high that when leaving a side street, it's hard to see approaching traffic. Here are a few things you can do to enter a snow-bound intersection safely.
If you can, position your car so the angle of your view is best towards the traffic you'll encounter first—and lean forward to see the approaching traffic as early as possible.
You should have the headlights on and be creeping slowly forward into the intersection. Look both ways and be ready to stop if you suddenly see traffic approaching.
At night, flashing the high beams can help alert other drivers that you are edging out from behind a snow bank. Whatever you can do to make yourself visible to other drivers will help.
In extreme situations, use a spotter if available to help you enter the main roadway safely. Still, the onus is on the driver entering the main roadway to ensure it is safe.
