Safe Stopping
Stopping behind other traffic sounds simple enough, but in certain situations, a stop in the wrong place can be deadly.
Each year, crashes between trains and cars occur because a driver stopped on the tracks behind other traffic.
This kind of accident is easily avoidable.
Some railway crossings are close enough to intersections that a line of traffic waiting at a red light extends across the tracks. If you're next in line, always wait until there's enough space for you to clear the tracks before pulling across.
This is also true for a regular intersection. You don't want to be stopped in an intersection when the crossing traffic gets the green light.
When stopped behind other traffic, you should be able see the tires of the car in front of you. This gives you maneuvering room if you do need to pull out, and a safety margin if the car suddenly backs up or if you're hit from behind. Give trucks even more space.
