Driving Tips > The 60-Second Driver
The Pembina/North Drive Intersection
All cities have their unique intersections, and Winnipeg is no exception.
On a particular stretch of Pembina Highway, the boulevard is quite wide and most of the crossing streets intersect at an angle, creating some interesting traffic problems--particularly when drivers travelling in opposite directions both want to turn left onto the main thoroughfare.
The correct procedure is to turn to the left of the centre of the intersection and let the other vehicle pass on your right. In some cases, that's tough to do.
At intersections with wide boulevards be more aware of how other drivers are going to make their turns. Approach the turn with more caution, and at a slower speed, so that you are ready to stop quickly if you need to.
Another common mistake at an intersection with a boulevard occurs when a second driver pulls up beside someone who is already waiting in the intersection. This is illegal and unsafe.
A large number, 29 per cent, of all accidents happen at intersections. That's why these unique areas require extra caution.
