Driving Tips > The 60-Second Driver
Pedestrian Safety
If you are walking or jogging, and there is a sidewalk, use it. The sidewalk keeps you away from traffic and is much safer than using the road.
As drivers, we need to be aware that pedestrians also have rights on the road. When approaching an intersection drivers must yield the right to way to any pedestrians crossing the street.
In areas where there is no sidewalk, it's better to use the left side of the road facing on-coming traffic. This way you'll be able to see the traffic coming well in advance.
If you are driving in an area where pedestrians are using the road, slow down, signal, and move over if it’s safe to do so. Leave enough space so you can pass the pedestrians safely. Pedestrians do have rights to the road.
As much as possible, it is recommended that you use a sidewalk instead of the roadway. But if you are on the road...remember - use the left side.
And wear bright, reflective clothing so you are easily visible - even during the day.
