Passing Stopped Vehicles

You’ve likely seen this before. One car is stopped, the light is green and there’s an open lane. Should you proceed? Absolutely Not!

Cars are usually stopped for a reason which may not be immediately apparent. Passing a stopped car could be dangerous. This could happen at an intersection or a straightway. If it’s an intersection, before you proceed in the open lane you should make sure it’s safe to do so.

There are many reasons for traffic to stop where you may not expect it to. It could be a child in a parking lot, a slow moving pedestrian at a crosswalk, emergency vehicles, or a funeral procession crossing an intersection.

These are just a few examples. The point is if a vehicle is stopped for no apparent reason you should also stop, or at least slow down and proceed with caution.

If you pass stopped vehicles you may be putting the lives of others at risk.
