Passing on a Highway

Passing on a Highway

On a highway, you’ve probably encountered slower moving vehicles. Passing at high speeds can be dangerous, so here is the proper procedure to ensure you do so safely.

When you want to pass:

  1. First check that you are allowed to pass. If there are double solid lines on the road, you must wait for a broken line before you pass.
  1. Check your mirrors and do a shoulder check to see if you can change lanes safely. If the lane is clear, put on your signal. Check again and change lanes if safe.
  1. Pass the slower moving vehicle. Remember – it is against the law to exceed the speed limit even when passing.
  1. Once the vehicle you are passing is visible in your rearview mirror, shoulder check and signal before returning to the other lane when safe.

On a two-lane highway, be extra cautious as you must also watch for on-coming traffic. And remember, slower moving vehicles should stay in the far right lane.
