Lane Designation Signs

Lane designation signs are often misunderstood, and sometimes completely ignored.

In many cases what appears to be a legal turn is not because the driver didn’t interpret the lane designation sign properly.

Here's a look at some of the different signs that are meant to regulate traffic:

White signs with a green circle surrounding a black arrow oblige all traffic to proceed in the direction(s) indicated.

Obligatory Lane Designation Signs

You may also see these signs overhead. They direct drivers in certain lanes to travel in the direction shown which could include more than one choice.

Discretionary Lane Designation Signs

Lane designation signs are there for your safety. Look for them as you approach an intersection, it could also save you from being fined.

Then there are lane use control signs--these are black with white arrows and are mounted at the side of the road before, or at an intersection.
