Intersections
We travel through intersections almost every time we drive. Intersections are where almost one-third of all crashes occur.
The following techniques will help lower your chances of a crash at an intersection:
- When approaching an intersection where you are not required to stop, scan ahead in all directions before entering.
- If your view into the intersection is blocked by a parked vehicle or large trees, slow down, stop if necessary, and be aware of pedestrians, especially children.
- When turning left or right, turn into the closest lane, then change lanes as necessary. Swinging out around the driver in front of you in a left turn is dangerous, and just like cutting someone off.
- When a green light is "unprotected" that means traffic in the opposite direction can travel through the intersection.
- If you have a green arrow to turn left, you are protected from traffic moving straight through the intersection in the opposite direction.
Always be aware of the type of intersection you are in.
