Getting Unstuck in Winter
It's a fact of life in this province. Winter brings deep snow which means getting stuck is not only possible, it's probable. Getting out of deep snow requires a little technique and an easy touch on the gas peddle.
Spinning the wheels faster and faster won't get your car moving, it will just dig you into a deeper hole. Tires that are spinning on snow or ice have little or no traction.
Press lightly enough on the gas peddle so that the wheels don't spin. Use light pressure at first. If the tires spin, release that pressure. Try to let the car roll over the snow.
Make sure the wheels are straight. And sometimes backing up first can help you carry some momentum into the deeper snow. Remember, easy pressure on the gas peddle and don't spin the wheels.
Rocking the vehicle can sometimes set you free but this takes practice. The more you spin the wheels, the deeper the rut.
Snow tires make huge difference in traction, or you can buy a traction device and store it in the trunk.
