Dangerous Driving
The law interprets the term “dangerous driving” more broadly nowadays. Some of the circumstances where dangerous driving charges are commonly being laid may surprise you. A conviction for dangerous driving results in ten demerits and higher Autopac premiums. It also means a hefty fine, licence suspension and maybe even time in jail.
Here's an example - bending over to pick up a burning cigarette while driving on the highway at 100 km/h. By the time you get your eyes back on the road, you've traveled the distance of a football field. The loss of concentration can result in an accident and you could be charged with dangerous driving.
Dangerous driving charges can also be laid if you cause an accident because:
- Your windshield is filthy or frosted-over
- You hurt someone while reading a newspaper or watching a video entertainment system while driving
- You are fishtailing or burning rubber while within the speed limit
Keep your eyes on the road and drive safely.
