Driving Tips > The 60-Second Driver
Cyclists and Cars
Many people use bicycles as basic transportation. It's fun, a great way to stay fit, and it's good for the environment. But, as motorists, we need to share the road safely with cyclists.
When passing a cyclist, the rules of the road say vehicles must slow down and change lanes if possible. If you can't change lanes, allow enough room between your vehicle and the cyclist to pass safely.
Also, when turning right check first for cyclists near the curb.
And before opening your door be sure to check your mirror.
Now remember cyclists share the same road, have the same rights and also have the same responsibilities.
If you are a cyclist, try to make yourself visible to those behind the wheel. Never assume that a driver can see you.
The highway traffic act states that cyclists must ride as close to the curb as practical. You must also obey the rules of the road by using hand signals and stopping at stop signs.
