Driving Tips > The 60-Second Driver
Car/Truck Safety
In the summer, we spend more time driving on highways. That means more time sharing the road with transport trucks.
With these big trucks, there are blind spots on all four sides. By making yourself more visible to the driver, you increase your safety.
When following a truck, you should be able to see the side mirrors. If you
can see the mirrors, the driver can see you.
Always be prepared for surprises when passing a truck at highway speed. You'll want two hands on the wheel because wind gusts can be strong when clearing the front end of the truck.
Don't pull in too close. Move back into the
lane when you can see the cab of the truck in your rear-view mirror, and maintain
your speed.
If a small car is too close to the front of a truck, it could be invisible to the truck driver. This would be a bad time to hit the brakes for an up-coming turn. At 90 km/h a semi will take 25% longer to stop than a car.
Give transport trucks lots of room and make your highway travels this summer
a lot safer.
