In the Community > Investing in vibrant communities
Municipal grants in lieu of taxes
As a provincial Crown corporation, we're exempt from paying taxes to communities in which we have property or conduct business. Therefore, we allocate annual grants in lieu of taxes in communities where we operate one or more claim centres. The payments support local municipal and school services.
Our investment dollars do more than generate income that helps reduce your premium costs. They also benefit local communities. Through provincial bonds and debentures, we assist schools, municipalities and health care institutions in our province. Virtually every new major infrastructure project in Manitoba receives some form of assistance from the corporation.
Organ and tissue donation
In partnership with Autopac brokers, we encourage Manitobans to carry the Donor Card, which indicates their wish to “give the gift of life.” Donor Cards are available wherever driver’s licences or Autopac policies are renewed. The card can also be downloaded at www.transplantmanitoba.ca.
Manitoba Public Insurance believes in supporting the artistic and cultural strengths of our province. We help all Manitobans enjoy these assets by supporting provincial tours of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and Manitoba Theatre Centre.
“Safe ride home” programs
We help festive events remain safe events by sponsoring programs that allow celebrants to be driven home in their own vehicles. In addition to Operation Red Nose, we sponsor safe ride home programs offered during events such as the annual Festival du Voyageur. This funding serves a dual purpose: It contributes to the success of the events while also promoting responsible decision-making when alcohol is consumed.
These sponsorships allow us to promote sports attractions, healthy living and local athletic talent, while also delivering road safety messages in the arenas and on the fields where they play. We sponsor our major sports teams and important events such as the Manitoba Special Olympics, Sport Manitoba Games, MSOS 55+ Games and national championships hosted in the province. Through major sports sponsorships, the corporation is also able to provide game tickets for underprivileged youth and community groups.
Computers for Schools Manitoba
The corporation has contributed more than 1,500 computers to the Computer for Schools program, which recycles surplus computer equipment to schools, libraries, literacy, volunteer groups and Community Access sites. The program was formed in 2003 as a joint initiative of the Government of Canada, the Government of Manitoba and other major corporations. For further information on the program visit www.cfsl.mb.ca or call 988-1790.
United Way
The corporation's 1,700 employees care about the communities in which they live and work. They make a difference through annual payroll deduction contributions to the United Way in Winnipeg and various rural centres.
In 2002, the corporation earned the distinction of being a Cornerstone Supporter of the United Way of Winnipeg for its contributions to the charity for 20 or more consecutive years. Every year we are among the top 10 corporate employee donor groups in Winnipeg.
