RoadWatch Checks
Studies show that drivers respond not just to enforcement, but to the threat of getting caught. With this in mind, Manitoba Public Insurance funds RoadWatch roadside checks throughout the year. This increased law enforcement helps raise public awareness of impaired driving as a serious road safety issue. Each year thousands of vehicles are pulled over during these additional random checks.
Operation Red Nose
Manitoba Public Insurance is a founding provincial sponsor of the Operation Red Nose “safe ride home” program. Administered by the Safety Services Manitoba, the annual December designated driver program works with community groups in Winnipeg, Brandon, Thompson, Flin Flon, The Pas and Gimli to ensure that Manitobans can get home safely in their own vehicles after festive celebrations.
For further information, contact Safety Services Manitoba at 949-1085 or visit their web site at http://www.safetyservicesmanitoba.ca/.
Safe Grad
In the past 25 years, thousands of high school students have been trained by the Manitoba Association of School Trustees to set up Safe Grad celebrations. Today more than 150 high schools participate.
The corporation sponsors training sessions to show students, parents, teachers and administrators how to conduct safe graduation celebrations. We also assist with the production and distribution of Safe Grad materials circulated to high schools participating in the program.
Manitoba Brain Injury Association
More than 70 per cent of the members of the Manitoba Brain Injury Association have been injured in motor vehicle crashes. To prevent future collisions, particularly those involving high-risk young drivers, the corporation works with the association to deliver a program called PARTY (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth).
The hard-hitting program annually takes 1,500 high school students inside hospital emergency rooms to show them the consequences of risky driving behaviour. PARTY is offered at the Health Sciences Centre and the Seven Oaks Hospital in Winnipeg, and at selected rural hospitals.
For more information, contact the Manitoba Brain Injury Association at 953-5355 or visit www.mbia.ca.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)
The corporation is the provincial sponsor of MADD's multi-media presentations to junior and senior high schools throughout the province. Through music, film clips, celebrities and testimonials, the presentation exposes and challenges false perceptions about drugs, alcohol and driving. More than 20,000 young people see these presentations each year.
Teens Against Drinking and Driving (TADD)
In partnership with the Manitoba Association of School Trustees, the corporation sponsors TADD programming in provincial high schools. We fund annual training sessions that help students establish and operate TADD chapters. We also help fund road safety presentations delivered by TADD members in their local communities.
Manitoba Addictions Awareness Week Resource Kit
The corporation provides road safety information for the Manitoba Addictions Awareness resource kit, which addresses a variety of topics ranging from drinking and driving to gambling and steroid use in sports. More than 1,500 kits are delivered to Manitoba English and French schools and various groups annually.
