Every day, Manitoba Public Insurance shows its value to Manitobans by investing in their communities and putting premium revenue back into the provincial economy in the form of claims benefits.
The corporation has built a national reputation for its affordable insurance rates, comprehensive coverage and attentive claims service. We demonstrate these advantages every year by comparing our rates to those charged throughout Canada. We reinforce them by ensuring that the amount we spend operating the company every year is less than 50 per cent of the Canadian industry average.
While the value of our insurance products is widely recognized, our overall importance to the economy is not so well known. The financial impact of our spending power and investment policies ripples throughout the province. These policies and practices contribute to Manitoba’s progress and prosperity through job creation, economic development and a contribution of more than $187 million in federal, provincial and municipal taxes.
Before Manitoba Public Insurance was established, insurance dollars collected from Manitobans would flow outside the province to Toronto, Montreal and New York. The creation of a public auto insurance system has kept investment dollars right here in Manitoba for the benefit of everyone.
Over our 32-year history, this has amounted to an investment of more than $798 million in our municipalities, schools and health-care facilities.
This year, the impact of Manitoba Public Insurance on the provincial economy was studied by the Manitoba Bureau of Statistics, which has assessed the economic impact of many major projects in the province. Using financial data from the 2001/02 insurance year, it found Manitoba Public Insurance spent nearly 99 per cent of its expenditures ($618 million) inside Manitoba and bought about 75 per cent of its goods and services from local businesses.

The Bureau also calculated significant spin-off effects. The dollars channelled into the provincial economy by Manitoba Public Insurance generated another $288 million in activity by other businesses, contributing to 10,065 direct and indirect jobs. Our core business — paying claims to repair vehicles and helping people recover from crashes — accounts for $450 million annually in economic activity. Manitoba Public Insurance returns a greater percentage of its premium dollar in the form of claims benefits than any other insurance company in Canada. This money flows to individual claimants, auto body shops and health-care professionals. Providing value to our customers means more than simply providing universal insurance coverage at an affordable cost. In doing so, we’re also helping build communities and creating greater economic opportunity for the whole province. |
